Classroom Songs - September

Here are some of the songs we have been singing together in our classroom. Enjoy!

Open & Shut Them

Open and shut them, open and shut them
Give a little clap, clap, clap

Open and shut them, open and shut them
Put them in your lap, lap, lap.

I am Special
(tune: Freres Jacques)

I am special, I am special
If you look, you will see
Someone very special, someone very special
That is me, that is me.

I Like To Go To School
(tune: Farmer in the Dell)

I like to go to school
I like to go to school
Heigh-ho-the-derry-oh,
I like to go to school.

I like to sing new songs
I like to sing new songs
Heigh-ho-the-derry-oh,
I like to sing new songs.

I like to play with friends
I like to play with friends
Heigh-ho-the-derry-oh,
I like to play with friends.

Catch a Falling Star

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Save it for a rainy day.

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket
Never let it fade away
Never let it fade away.

No David!

Hello families,

We are into our fourth week of school and settling into all of our routines and classroom expectations. The children are learning to respect our learning space and each other by sharing, taking turns and using polite words such as 'please' and 'thank you'.

On Monday we read a story called "David Goes to School" by David Shannon. In the story a young boy has trouble remembering to follow the rules of his classroom. The children love listening to the story as well as shaking their fingers at the character saying loudly, "NO DAVID!".

As we read the story the children are reminded of simple rules in our classroom...

What does David need to remember when he goes to school?
-Clean up (Muqadis)
-You can play with your friends (Mariam)
-Say sorry (Shazana)
-I can play with all my friends (Zohair)
-Clean up all the tables (Huriyah)
-Be ready for school (Aaron)
-Clean up before you play somewhere else (Sofia)
-Eat your snack only (Amena)

Snapshots of Learning: First Few Days

Here are some photographs to show the various ways children explore our classroom and express their learning through play.

Sharing the playdough.

Counting with materials at the math carpet.

Creating our own paintings using water colours at the Art Studio.

Creating designs using our imagination.
(Can you count all the yellow dinosaurs?)

Exploring materials from the sea at the Science Table.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten

During the first full week of school in Room 166 we read stories about coming to school for the first time. One of our favourite books was called "Miss. Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten" by Joseph Slate.

The story starts with Miss. Bindergarten walking into her dark and empty Kindergarten classroom, slowly she opens up boxes and creates a beautiful classroom by the end of the book.

Now families, we can share with you what our classroom looked like when Ms. Gourgiotis and Ms. Hammond first walked in during August.

The classroom at the end of June 2012.

Ms. Gourgiotis and Ms. Hammond move everything around.

Now we can see where we are going to put all of our learning centres!

Ta-dah! The classroom is ready for all of our Kindergarten friends!

Welcome

Thank you families for checking out our first blog post for Room 166 in the morning class.

We are looking forward to working with all of our families and getting to know all of the new children in our class. We will keep this blog up to date with information about our classroom, stories we have read together, projects we have been working on and discoveries we have made together. Please feel free to respond to our posts - have your child help you type and comment on what he or she likes on the blog!

Thank you,
Ms. Gourgiotis
